The MASTT2040 project has released its deliverable “D3.1 MaaS Roadmap and Pathways towards 2040”. This strategic document outlines how Manufacturing as a Service can transform European industry in support of the EU’s Twin Transition.

A Shared Vision for 2040

By 2040, MaaS is expected to provide the decentralised digital backbone of European manufacturing. It will enable adaptive, on-demand production through resilient networks, circular value chains, and human-centric work environments supported by intelligent systems

The vision focuses on three pillars:

  • Resilient supply chains that adapt quickly to disruptions.
  • Circular and sustainable MaaS ecosystems minimising waste and resource dependency.
  • Human-centric, flexible production systems where workers are empowered by AI and automation

Roadmap and Use Cases

Developed through participatory foresight workshops, the roadmap translates this vision into short, medium and long-term pathways. It includes five forward-looking use cases, from local manufacturing networks to “Everything as a Service” models. These demonstrate how MaaS can deliver resilience, sustainability, and competitiveness for European industry

Standards and Policy Support

The deliverable also stresses the need for standards, regulation and legislation to ensure data trust, interoperability, and secure collaboration. These aspects will feed into the upcoming MASTT2040 Industry Strategy & Action Plan

Supporting Europe’s Transition

As highlighted in the project’s Grant Agreement, MASTT2040 aims to guide European manufacturing towards circularity, decarbonisation and strategic autonomy, strengthening Europe’s role in the global industrial landscape
